 Winston Churchill, former British Prime Minister, is well known for his role in World War II (WWII) along with Franklin Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin against Adolf Hitler. Churchill grew up in Ireland, Dublin, before he was sent to a boarding school in London, there he joined the Rifle Corps which led to his military career. It took him three attempts to pass the exam to join the career but once in he finished 20th in a class of 130.  While in the army, Churchill wrote reports for newspapers, The Pioneer and Daily Telegraph, he has also written two books on his experiences, The Story of the Malakand Field Force (1898) and River War (1899). He later worked as a war correspondent for the Morning Post, during an expedition for a report on the Boers War he was captured by the Boers, but Churchill escaped and made headlines on reaching the Portuguese territory in Mozambique travelling a distance of 300 miles. Churchill wrote about his experience in the book London to Ladysmith (1900).

 

Churchill became a member of the parliament, joining the Liberal Party in 1904 and was appointed to the Prime Ministers Cabinet as President of the Board of Trade. Churchill introduced the first minimum wage and set up Labour Exchanges for the unemployed and unemployment insurance. Churchill served as First Lord of Admiralty from 1911 and helped modernise the British Navy, he was also one of the first to promote military aircraft and set up the Royal Navy Air Service, Churchill was very enthusiastic that he took flying lessons to understand the military potential.

Though Churchill was not responsible for the failure in the Battle of Galipoli, he resigned his post and rejoined the British Army again and was later appointed as Minister of Munitions overseeing production of tanks, airplanes and munitions. Due to certain events, Churchill was defeated as a Member of the Parliament and joined the Conservative Party as Chancellor of Exchequer leading Britain to the gold standard and set a hard line against labour strike which threatened to cripple British Economy.

 

As Germany rose to power, Churchill served as an Advocate for the British rearmament under Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. King George VI elected Churchill as Prime Minister and Minister of Defense after Germany invaded Norway. Churchill placed intelligent and talented men in key positions and it was during this time his famous speech that the “Battle of Britain” was about to begin. Churchill collaborated with the USA and the Soviet Union to develop a united strategy against the Axis Powers and helped bring post- war world with United Nations as the centrepiece. 

 

He was in and out of the Parliament after WWII but still had an impact on World Affairs, during Churchill’s visit to the United States in 1946 he made his famous “Iron Curtain” speech warning of Soviet dominance. Churchill was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. Churchill passed away at the age of 90 and Britain mourned for more than a week.
